Answer:
Manuscripts are not defined by their contents, which may combine writing with mathematical calculations, maps, explanatory figures or illustrations. Manuscripts were produced on vellum and other parchment, on papyrus, and on paper. In Russia birch bark documents as old as from the 11th century have survived.

Many manuscripts have survived due to the following reasons:
- Manuscripts: Written materials of older times can be termed manuscripts. As there was no paper, so the texts were written on leaves, animal skin, and clothes.
- Reasons that many manuscripts have not survived: Most of the manuscripts were written by hand, also the material on which texts were written we're weak. So, they couldn't survive. Furthermore, it was hard to carry them because of their low strength.
- Reasons that many manuscripts have survived: After the arrival of printing machines, texts were printed instead of written and the use of paper had come into existence, so, those manuscripts might have been preserved. Also, many manuscripts were translated and renewed so that the subject matter could survive. The manuscripts which were preserved or preservatives were used to give them a longer life and those manuscripts whose material was stronger probably have survived.
