Colonial period means that a country taking over the politics,society and economy. This is also called colonialism. Britishers thought this was way powerfully since the people of India cannot do anything about it. They can be fooled easily. That's how the britishers came into India and took over the economy, politics etc...

Medieval was used to describe a period in which modern things did not exist. For the Indians instead of medieval and modern period, many people think this was the colonial period as they didn't have equality, freedom etc...
