When George and J. went to a river-side inn at Wallingford,There they started talking with an old fellow and during their conversation it was revealed that they were strangers and would be going away the next morning. They saw a huge dusty glass case fixed above the chimney with a trout in it. The old man claimed that he caught it sixteen years ago and it weighed eighteen pounds six ounces. He said that he had caught it just below the bridge with a minnow. After he went away, there came the local carrier who told them he caught the fish five year ago just below the lock and the remarkable thing about it was that he caught it with a fly. According to him it weighed twenty six pounds. He bade good night and went away. Another man came and told them how he had caught it early one morning and left away. Then came a middle-aged man and they all sat without a word. George went to that man and asked if he would tell how he caught that trout up there. When he questioned him how they knew that he had caught the trout, they replied that it was their instinctive feeling. The man was amused and said that it took him half an hour to to land it and it had broken his rod. He told them that when he reached home and weighed, it was thirty four pounds. Last came the landlord of the inn who, after listening to the earlier stories from George and J,  had his own story to tell how he had caught the fish He told that the .names of those people who claimed to have caught the fish were Jim Bates, Joe Muggles, Mr. Jones and Billy Maunders . He said he had caught it years ago when he was a lad, not by art or skill, but by that unaccountable luck that appears to always wait upon a boy when he plays the wag from school, and goes out fishing on a sunny afternoon, with a bit of a string tied to the end of a tree.

THE FINAL result IS THAT THE TROUT WAS ACTUALLY MADE OF PLASTER OF PARIS AND WAS NOT CAUGHT BY ANYONE IN THE RIVER.
At the end of the night, George trips and grabs the trout to steady himself. The trout falls to the ground and shatters, and the men realize that it is made of plaster of Paris.
