Answer:

The correct answer to the question -"Many trees especially in colder climates lose their leaves during the winter. Then how do they make their food during this period? is-

During this period, the excess food stored in the plants during photosynthesis is used during this period.

Explanation:

During winter, tree roots are not able to access liquid water as the ground is frozen. Inorder, to restrict leaves from wasting water through transpiration, trees lose their leaves in  colder climates. The technical term for losing leaves is known as abscission.

During the fall, the cells of this  layer begin to swell and form a cork-like material, reducing and finally cutting off  between leaf and tree.  Thus, Glucose and waste products get trapped in the leaf. ,then, chlorophyll begins to disappear as without fresh water to renew it.

In colder climate, the temperature cause the production of auxin to reduce and this breaks the abscission layer,  which causes the leaves to detach from the trees. Losing leaves helps the tree to retain water during the winter and thus, it needs less energy to stay alive.

During dormancy, the metabolism of tree, or other internal processes, slow down. The tree doesn’t consume as much energy, and it will stop growing. By doing this, it  conserves energy to stay alive during the cold winter.
