JUSTFICTION...The Maratha kingdom was a powerful kingdom which arose out of a sustained opposition to Mughal rule.

Shivaji (1627-1680): He carved out a stable kingdom with the support of powerful warrior families (deshmukhs). The backbone of the Maratha army was the groups of highly mobile, peasant-pastoralists (kunbis). He used these forces to challenge the Mughals in India. • Chatrapati Maharaja was the main head of the Empire of Maratha. He  is one of the major reason for the effective administrative system developed.

• After the “death of Chatrapati”,  Shahu Maharaja and Madhavrao I, the command of the Empire of Maratha came under the hands of the Peshwa, at which time many local rulers played an important role in keeping their state safe.
