Marble is al limestone which is generalky basic in nature .and air contained many harm full gases such as co2 ,no2,so2

when these gases react with water then form acids which react with the alkaline substance .and due to this reaction the statues get corroded

Chemically marble is calcium cafbonate.

The atmosphere contains many oxides,which dissolve in water forming acids such as sulphur dioxide due to pollution. These acids react with marble and start corroding them and forming a yellow coating on them. The best example of marble being corroded is the Taj Mahal.
