Marie Antoinette was the wife of Louis XVI, the reigning king at the time of the French Revolution.

She played various roles in both causing and accelerating the revolution:

She was a very elaborate spender, which did not help in the disastrous economic climate of France in the 1780s, which suffered greatly from getting involved in the American Revolution. This caused resentment from the people, earning her the nickname ‘madame deficit’.

When France went to war with Austria in 1791, Marie Antoinette, due to being Austrian herself, was accused of passing secrets to the enemy, and forming part of the so-called ‘Austrian Committee’.

She was also involved in the failed flight of the royal family to Verennes, as the family had been secluded to the Tuileries in Paris, which damaged their reputation immensely as anti-revolutionaries.

Answer:

Who Was Marie Antoinette?

Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna, better known as Marie Antoinette, was the last queen of France who helped provoke the popular unrest that led to the French Revolution and to the overthrow of the monarchy in August 1792. She became a symbol of the excesses of the monarchy and is often credited with the famous quote "Let them eat cake," although there is no evidence she actually said it. As consort to Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette was beheaded nine months after her husband by order of the Revolutionary tribunal. She was 37 years old
