Marina Beach in Chennai is one of the biggest tourist attractions of Tamil Nadu, gathering crowds from all over the country. The beach is said to have one of the most magnificent views with glittering golden sand and a clear strip of blue sea extending from Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south covering a distance of 13 km, making it the longest urban beach in India. The beach stretches along the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, also listed among the longest urban beaches in the world.
The beach is a prominent place in Chennai as it hosts many important national and cultural events like the parades on Independence Day and Republic Day. The annual Chennai Marathon, India’s biggest city marathon, starts from Anna Square near Marina beach. The Pongal celebration in January attracts an estimated 150,000 people on the beach for the festivities. It has also been featured in numerous Tamil movies over the years.
