Mariyah had to solve the following question; "Compare the following integers and explain your reasoning- |-6.25| [] −6520" Mariyah said, "I believe −6520 is greater than |-6.25|because those two lines around -6.25 represent absolute value and the absolute value is -6.25 because that is the distance -6.25 is away from zero. Also −6520 has a five in the numerator which is greater than the 2 in tenths place so −6520 is greater." Explain the error in Mariyah's reasoning and solve the question. Explain your reasoning.

Given :  Mariyah had to solve the following question; "Compare the following integers   |-6.25| [] −6 5/20

To find : Explain the error in Mariyah's reasoning and solve the question

Solution:

error in Mariyah's reasoning

absolute value is -6.25  and distance -6.25 is away from zero.

Absolute value is always with out sign and distance is always positive and sign is used just to show direction .

Another error

five in the numerator which is greater than the 2 in tenths place

for comparing numerator  Denominator should be equal

Also Comparing -ve numbers  number with smaller absolute value is greater.

| -6.25|  = 6.25

- 6  5/20  = - 6.25

 6.25 > - 6.25

=> | - 6.25 | > - 6  5/20
