Answer:

Characteristics of Soil Types in India:

Alluvial Soil:  It is formed by the deposition of the river load as it flows from its upper to the lower course. In the upper reaches of the river valleys, the soils are often coarse in texture. Soil particles are large and non-uniform in size. Such soils are predominant in piedmont plains (plains near the foot of the mountains). In the lower reaches, the soil particles become smaller and more uniform and are found upto a depth of 500 meters. It is light and porous and hence can be tilled easily.

Red Soil: It is porous and has a high percentage of iron oxide. In general, it is found to be shallow and its pH value ranges from 6.6 to 8.0. It is loose and aerated and is poor in terms of the quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter.

Black Soil: It is fine textured and clayey in nature. It has high amounts of lime, iron, magnesium and generally low quantities of phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter. It is black in colour since it is formed from weathered lava rocks.
