Explanation: It is due to the presence of extra chromosome no.21. It is also referred as trisomy 21.These individuals have 47 chromosomes instead of having 46.

Normally during ,meiosis there is an equal distribution of chromosomes to each daughter cell.

In trisomy normal separation of chromosomes failed to occur and instead one pair of chromosomes remains together.

The result is that one gamete has both the homologous chromosomes while other gamete is without any chromosome of this number.
