Mark the simple and complex sentences in the following passage. One has been done for you.

A long time ago there lived an seven year-old boy in Holland whose name was Prince (complex sentence). He was the son of a sluicer. A sluicer is a man whose job is to oper and close the sluices located near the face of dams. A big part of Holland is lower than the level of the sea. The sea water is kept from flooding the land only by means of strong dams and sluices. The sluices, which are often strained to the utmost by the pressure of tides, become very weak and breakable. Such a weak sluice can overflow the whole land in no time. Dutch children who are very young also know about this. One day, when Prince was coming back from somewhere, he saw a tiny hole in the dam. He instantly knew that the tiny hole will soon become a big source of their misery. The whole land, can be flooded any moment. He instinctively put his hand inside the hole which held his tiny hand just right. The flowing water stopped immediately. Prince waited there for the entire night.

Sentences are classified into four main categories. They are:-

1. Simple sentence.

2. Compound sentence.

3. Complex sentence.

4. Compound-Complex sentence.

  • A complex sentence is the sentence which has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
  • Complex sentences are one of the four types of sentences based on structure from simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex.
  • Their difference is that they contain a dependent clause. Only complex sentences and complex-compound sentences has the dependent clauses.
  • Dependent clauses are also known as the subordinate clauses. They are the clauses that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. Without an independent clause, a dependent clause is just a sentence fragments.
  • The subordinating conjunctions, like because, since, if, until, when, even though, in case, while, now that, and certain uses of the prepositions before and after are done in the complex sentences.
  • With a subordinating conjunction, the clause becomes the description of another clause. In this way, the dependent clauses change the meaning of the independent clauses.
  • The difference between a simple and a complex sentence is easier to explain. A Simple sentence is any sentence which has only one independent clause. Any sentence with more than one clause, including complex sentences, cannot be a simple sentence.
  • Interestingly, we can sometimes combine two simple sentences to create one complex sentence, if we add a subordinate conjunction in the sentences to join them.
