Mary’s floor is a rectangle 8 m long and 5 m wide.
She wants to cover the floor completely with carpet tiles.
Each carpet tile is square with sides of length 50 cm.
Each carpet tile costs £4.19
Work out the cost of covering Mary’s floor completely with carpet tiles.

Area of rectangle=length×breadth

therefore, area of Mary's floor=8×5=40 m^2

Area of square= length of side^2

50 cm=0.5 m

therefore, area of a single carpet tile: (0.5)^2=0.25 m^2

No. of tiles= 40÷0.25=160 tiles

Cost of laying 160 tiles= 160×4.19=£670.4
