Maryann and Carlos will have saved the same amount after 2 hours.

Given:

Maryann has $9 saved and can earn $6 per hour babysitting.

Carlos has $3 saved and can earn $9 per hour working at his family’s restaurant.

To find:

After how many hours of work will Maryann and Carlos have saved the same amount?

Solution:

Let Maryan and Carlos will earn the same amount after 'x' hours

Since Maryan has $ 9 already

The amount earned by Maryan after 'x' hours = 9 + 6x

Carlos has $ 3 already

The amount earned by Carlos after 'x' hours = 3 + 9x

As it is assumed that after 'x' hours both earned the same amount

=> 9 + 6x = 3 + 9x

=> 9x - 6x = 9 - 3

=> 3x = 6

=> x = 6/3

=> x = 2

Therefore,

Maryann and Carlos will have saved the same amount after 2 hours.
