Masks have fascinated human beings from time immemorial. Perhaps this is because it is our face
that characterizes us, and gives us our identity as a person. But when we wear a mask, we can
completely transform our personalities into something totally different. A mask can conceal,
highlight and change the image of its wearer. This is the reason why masks have been so popular
and have played such an important role in human society, both as an interesting tool for
entertainment and a powerful instrument for conducting different rituals.
Masks are made of many different materials and their shapes and sizes vary from one geographical
region to another. Some masks may cover only the face or eyes, others may conceal the entire head
or the head and shoulders.
India has an outstanding tradition of mask making and masks in our country are unique and truly
beautiful. The Chhau dance form of Bihar is a popular folk dance, full of energy and spontaneity.
The dance is so called because the 'Chhau' or mask is an essential feature of the dance. Chhau
dances depict nature and the animal world. Famous dances include the Serpent dance, the Ocean
dance and the Harvest dance.
One of the most interesting folk dances of Kerala, called the 'Padayani' involves dancers who wear
huge 'kolams' or masks. These enormous masks which have many projections and elaborate
headgear, are painted on the stalks, spreading leaves of palms. In the 'Theyyam', another folk
dance of Kerala, performers wear masks and elaborate head-dresses made of cloth that may be up
to forty feet high! Kodiattam is another masked dance of Kerala and it is performed in a specially
erected hall called 'Koothambala'. The world famous Kathakali dance of Kerala which is thought to
have evolved from the art of Kodiattamm also involves masked dancers, dancing to pouranic themes
wearing colorful masks and huge head dresses,
In Orissa chapters from the Ramayana are enacted in the 'Sahi Jatra' theatre. Actors wear elaborate
masks and headgear made from sponge and wood. But in this form of theatre, there is no dialogue-
only actions by the masked players. In the town of Varanasi masks are made from brass, and portray
Hanuman and Durga.
In the north-eastern state of Tripura, beautiful masks are carved from bamboo. In Arunachal Prades​
