mass of rifle is 3-4 kg whereas mass of bullet is 40-50 gram. But when the bullet is fired from the rifle, the bullet acquires larger speed and covers larger distance and rifle recoils for very smaller distance. why?

its all about momentum

we know that momentum is the product of mass and velocity

since there is no external force involved

therefore

linear momentum is conserved in theprocess

hence the rifle and bullet both aquirethe same momentum

now since rifle is quite heavy it has asmaller speed

while the bullet has a very small massso it aquires greater velocity in order tocompensate for the momentum
