Mass plants conserve soil because their roots bind the soil together. The roots of plants interweave with other roots and form a more solid mass which is less susceptible to both wind and water erosion.

Vegetation acts like an interface between the soil and the atmosphere. It increases the permeability of the soil and decreases runoff. The rate of surface erosion increases if vegetation is removed.
