Mango tree - Autotroph

Mushroom - Saprophyte

Pitcher Plant - Insectivorous plant

Cuscuta - Parasitic

Elephant - Heterotroph

  • Autotrophs are mainly chlorophyll bearing, photosynthetic lifeforms. They synthesise their own food using sunlight and carbon dioxide to yield glucose and oxygen as the byproduct. eg. primary producers like plants and trees.
  • Saprophytes are organisms that derive nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter via extracellular digestion using secretory digestive enzymes. eg. Fungi like Mushrooms, bread moulds etc.
  • Insectivorous plants trap the insects in their modified stem or leaf-like structures to derive the nutrients in a digested form. eg. Pitcher plant, Venus flytrap etc.
  • Parasitic Plants are those that depend on the host plant for their survival. They acquire nutrients from the host plant using absorptive organs like haustoria and make them ultimately weak. Cuscuta is a total stem parasite.
  • Heterotrophs are those that depend mainly on primary producers and other consumers for their nourishment. They are unable to synthesise the simple absorptive form of nutrients from inorganic matter. eg. Humans, Animals like Lion, cheetahs etc.
