When one substance is dissolved in another substance and mixing it well, It forms a homogenous mixture i.e. Solution. All mixtures are not homogenous and not all mixtures are solutions.

  • A solution in which water acts as a Solvent, then it is known as aqueous solution. And, if solvent is anything other than Water, it is a non-aqueous solution.

⬆️ Like here, In this question !! The solvent are non-aqueous. Not all substances are soluble in water, but they can dissolve in other solvents like alcohol, oil etc.

There are two components of Solution:

Solvent - That dissolves the other component and is present in majority is known as Solvent. Like in Salt solution, water is in bulk and it dissolves Salt in it, Hence Water is the Solvent here.

Solute - The component which dissolves in solvent is known as Solute. It is lesser in quantity. Like in the above case, Salt is the solute..

⏹ Not all substances have equal solubility, Here solubility is the ability of capacity of a substance to dissolve in per unit volume of solvent at a fixed temperature.

Some examples of non-aqueous solvents are:

  • Alchohol
  • Carbon Disulphide
  • Acetone
  • Benzene etc.

Some examples of non-aqueous solutions are:

  • Iodine + Carbon tetra chloride
  • Sulphur + Carbon disulphide
  • Bromine + Chloroform
  • Sugar + Alcohol
  • Paraffin wax + Turpentine oil
