Match the pairs:

1. Ascribed status - Caste system

Ascribed status is defined as the type of social status of a person that is assigned to them at birth. It can also be assumed later in life involuntarily as well. For example: age, sex, caste, ethnicity, etc.

2. Achieved Status - Doctor

The achieved status of a person is one which is earned or chosen by them. It usually reflects the skills, talents and potential of the particular individual. In an open society, one can achieve social mobility through achieving some status in society. For eg.: Doctor, criminal, lawyer, etc.

3. Secondary group - Trade union

Secondary groups are large, impersonal groups which includes several people who come together for achieving a particular goal. There is less emotional investment in these groups as the nature of the relationships in the group is goal-oriented. For eg.: Work, college, NCC, etc.

4. Primary group - Territorial group

  • Territorial groups are those which have a defined territory. These groups have the tendency to establish and defend areas as their own and those of others.
  • Primary groups are those groups which are small, personal and intimate. Here, the relationship is an end in itself as opposed to relationships in secondary groups which are a means to an end. Family, neighborhood, peer groups, etc. are examples of primary groups.

5. Community - Role

  • A community is a group of people who follow a particular social structure (culture beliefs, norms) within a society.
  • Role is defined in Sociology as the set of behaviours that is socially expected from a particular individual occupying a particular role in society.
