Answer:

Number Of Shares Sold = 600

Step-by-step explanation:

John had 1,000 shares of a company with a face value of 40 & 8% dividend

=> Dividend Income = 1000 *  (8/100) * 40  = 3200

Let say Jogn Sold  S shares

Dividend on S shares was Expected = S * (8/100)*40 = 3.2S

Sold at Discount of 10 % => 40 - (10/100) * 40  = 36 Rs per shares

Selling Amount = 36 S

Bought 20 Shares

so Amount Paid per Share = 36S/20  = 1.8S

He paid a premium of 50% so

Share Face Value = 1.8S/1.5  = 1.2S

Dividend Received =  20 *  (12/100) * 1.2S  = 2.88S

3.2S - 2.88S = 192

=> 0.32S = 192

=> S = 600

Number Of Shares Sold = 600
