Materials Required

Clean and dry test tube -4 Nos
Rust - free and clean iron nails -4 Nos
Quick lime -10 g
Sodium chloride solution -25 ml
Dilute hydrochloric acid / Vinegar -25 ml
Cork -1 No

Procedure

Put the iron nails , one each , in the four test tubes . Drop a small piece of moist cotton in the first test tube and keep it exposed to atmospheric .
In the second test tube , some quick lime and keep it closed ( Quick Time can absorb moisture ) .
by the third test tube pour some sodium chloride solution such that half of the nail stays immersed in it .
In the fourth test tube, pour some dilute hydrochloric acid/ vinegar to immerse half of the nail.

Observe the changes that occur to the iron nails after one week.

•Which test tubes had their nails rusted? •Which test tubes had the maximum amount of rust in the iron nails kept in them?
•What are the factors which favour the corrosion of an iron articie kept exposed to atmosphere?
