Answer:

The answer has to do with the fundamental properties of operations on numbers (the notions of "addition", "subtraction", "multiplication", and "division"). ... This is in fact the reason why the negative numbers were introduced: so that each positive number would have an additive inverse.

We know that 1 is the Multiplicative Identity

So by using the property of Multiplicative Identity

We get

( - 1) \times 1 = 1 \times ( -1 ) =  - 1

Again distributive law under multiplication states that

a \times (b + c) = (a \times b) + (a \times c)

Let us take

a=−1,b=1,c=−1

We get from above

(−1) \times (1+(−1))=(−1) \times 1+(−1) \times (−1)  \: ...........(1)

Here

(1+(−1))=0   \:  \: and  \:  \:  (−1) \times 1=−1

From Equation (1)

(−1) \times 0=−1+(−1) \times (−1)

Since

 (−1) \times 0=0 \:  \: and \:  \: 0=−1+(−1) \times (−1)

ADDITION gives

1=(−1) \times (−1)

Thus

Negative × Negative = Positive
