Given:

A patient's temperature taken by a nurse is written as 103.2.

To Find:

i). On which scale is it taken?

ii). By how much is the patient's temperature more than

normal temperature in °C?

Solution:

i). The temperature is taken on the Fahrenheit scale.

ii). The relation between degree Celsius (C)and Fahrenheit (F) is,

C = \frac{5}{9} (F - 32)..

Here, F = 103.2.

So,

C = \frac{5}{9}(103.2 - 32) .

C = \frac{5}{9} 71.2.

C = 39.5.

Now, the difference in the patient's temperature and normal temperature is,

Normal body temperature = 37°C.

The difference in the temperature =  patient's body temperature - normal body temperature.

The difference in the temperature = 39.5 - 37 °C.

The difference in the temperature = 2.5°C.

Hence, The temperature is taken on the Fahrenheit scale, and the patient's temperature is 2.5°C more than normal temperature.
