The population of Madhya Pradesh stood at 7.25 crore comprising 3.76 crore males and 3.49 crore females as of March 1 as per provisional figures of the Census released today.The Census findings are mixed with the growth in population slowing down during the decade and overall gender ratio showing improvement but the gender ratio for kids deteriorated further.Director for Madhya Pradesh Census Sachin Sinha told reporters here that as per provisional figures, Indore was the most densely populated district with a population of 32.72 lakh while Harda with population of 5.70 lakh was the least populated district in the state.The Director said that the population growth rate during the decade 2001\11 had gone down to 20.3 per cent against 24.3 per cent in the 1991 to 2001 period.As per the provisional figures, the sex ratio in the State was now 930 ( 930 female per 1000 male)against 919 recorded 10 years ago.In Balaghat district, the number of females exceeded that of males as the sex ratio there was a high of 1023 whereas in Bhind district, the sex ratio was lowest at 838.The Director said that for children in the age group upto six years, the gender ratio was 912 against 932 in 2001.Sinha said that the gender ratio for kids was a high of 971 in Alirajpur district and lowest at 825 in Morena district. The Director said that the census was conducted in Madhya Pradesh from February nine to 28 in all the 50 districts, 476 towns, 342 tehsils and 54,903 villages in the State.Sinha said that children formed 14.6 per cent of the total population of Madhya Pradesh.He said that the literacy rate in Madhya Pradesh was 70.6 per cent out of which the rate for males was 80.5 per cent and that for females 60 per cent adding the literacy rate in the State had increased by 6.9 per cent in the last decade.Sinha said that the literacy rate was highest in Jabalpur district at 82.5 per cent and lowest at 37.2 per cent in the Alirajpur district.
