The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant narrates the story of an arrogant, narcissistic housewife, Mathilde, who yearned for the aristocratic lifestyle which she thought she was praiseworthy for.
- EXPLANATION:Mathilde, the central character of the story is beautiful and social, and she wants luxurious items to match her erudite taste. However, she was born into a clerk's family and also gets married to another clerk, hence she is unable to afford the accessories, household items, and clothing which she wants, and that makes her unhappy.
- Mathilde desires always more than what she has, and refuses to conform to the status of her middle class, which will never make her happy. She spends her time dreaming of things she can't have, and so she's unhappy and tormented. Mathilde lives in an illusionary world in which her wishes cannot live up to their reality.
- She longs for high-class status, and she feels that her appearance and charm is much more valuable. Mathilde spends her time doing all that she can to build her dream life, perfect, rich and admired. Her husband gave her a good lifestyle which she abused and poorly treated with egoism and greed, and she took advantage of his hard work as much as possible.
