MATHS LAB ACTIVITY
Aim: To model and solve linear equation of type ax + + b = c+d
Material required: Few big red buttons, few big green buttons, few small paper plates, chart
paper and a marker pen
Procedure:
Step 1: Let a = 6, b = 14, c = 9 and d = -13. So, we have the equation 6r + 14 = 9x - 13 to
model. Let one paper plate represent x, one green button represent I and one red button
represent -1.
Step 2: On a chart paper, draw two rectangles with an equal sign between them.
Step 3: Place 6 paper plates and 14 green buttons on one rectangle to represent left hand side
of the equation. Place 9 paper plates and 13 red buttons on other rectangle to represent
the right hand side of the equation.
Step 4: In order to solve the equation, remove 6 paper plates from each side. This leaves
3 paper plates on the right hand side while there are no paper plates on the left hand
side.
Step 5: Add 13 green buttons on both sides. This results in 27 green buttons on the left hand
side. On the right hand side, there are 13 green and 13 red buttons, which represem
zero. So, remove all buttons from the right hand side.
Step 6: Now there are 3 paper plates on one side and 27 green buttons on the other side. Try
to place equal number of buttons in each paper plate The number of buttons on each
plate so obtained is the solution of the equation,
