Maths Lab Activity
Aim to verify the formula (a + b + 2ab
Materials required: Cut outs of thick sheets of paper of different shapes a square of side
sem a square of side 2 cm and two rectangles of length cm and breadth 2 cm
Procedure
Place the squares and rectangles as shown below thg 6 503)
1
1
2. We can see that (5 + 2) = 72 = 49. Thus, we have formed a square with sides 7 cm
3. In the square with sides 7 cm, we can see that there are four parts which join together to
form the larger square. These parts are a square of area 52 sq em, two rectangles of area
(
52) sq cm each and a square of area 2. sq em
4. So, the area of the square with sides 7 em can be divided into four smaller areas
72 – 52 + (5 * 2) + (
52)+22-52+2 (5 *2)+22
Again, 72 (5+2)
Hence, (5 + 2)= 52 + 2 * (52)+22
