Maths Lab Activity Alm: To understand square numbers S1 S3 07 Materials required: a. A peg board b. Pegs of different colours Method: Take a peg board and pegs to make squares of different sizes. A single peg will be considered as a square of side 1 unit. Make seven squares (of sides 1, 2, 3, ..., 7 units) on the peg board and name them as S., S,..., S., respectively. You will observe the following. * Number of pegs used in first square, S = 1 =1² Number of pegs used in second square, S = 4=2² S2 Number of pegs used in third square, S = 9 = 3² S4 Number of pegs used in fourth square, S. = 16 = 42 Number of pegs used in fifth square, S. = 25 = 5 Number of pegs used in sixth square, S = 36 = 6 Number of pegs used in seventh square, S. = 49 = 72 The numbers 1,4,9,16,25,36,49 are called square numbers since these number of pegs can be arranged to make squares. Continuing S6 S7 in the same way, you can get the next square numbers as 82 = 64, 92 = 81, 102 = 100, 112 = 121 and so on.
