Answer:
Value of a is 3 and value of b is 1.
Step-by-step explanation:
It is given that ( x + 2 ) is the factor of the given polynomial x^2 + ax + 2b, also a + b = 4 ,
By Factor Theorem : -
[ x - ( - 2 ) ] , value of f( - 2 ) should be 0,
= > f( x ) = x^2 + ax + 2b
= > f( - 2 ) = ( - 2 )^2 + a( - 2 ) + 2b = 0
= > 0 = 4 - 2a + 2b
= > 2a - 2b = 4
= > 2( a - b ) = 4
= > a - b = 2
= > a = 2 + b ...( i )
In the question, given, a + b = 4,
Now substituting the value of a from ( i )
= > ( 2 + b ) + b = 4
= > 2 + 2b = 4
= > 2b = 4 - 2
= > 2b = 2
= > b = 1
Substituting the value of b in ( i )
= > a = 2 + b
= > a = 2 + 1
= > a = 3
