Ram and syam were playing a game and krithi who is 1 year younger than ram was watching them play. Here is their conversation.Ram: shyam, think of a number in your mind and then double it.(Shyam told the number to krithi and the number was 5)Ram: add 6 to the result and then find the half of the number.Shyam did the calculation and got the result as (5+5+6)/2= 8.Ram : then subtract the number that you thought in the starting from the result, 3 is left behind.Krithi was so surprised by this and asked ram how did he get to know, he told her that he is a magician and started laughing.

Solution :-

Let us assume that, shyam think of number in mind is x .

so,

→ Double of number = 2x

now,

→ Add 6 to the number and half = (2x + 6)/2

now, subtracting the number , result is 3 .

→ (2x + 6)/2 - x = 3

hence, the required algebraic expression representing this situation is (2x + 6)/2 - x = 3 .

The result if the number that shyam thought was 4 is,

→ (2 * 4 + 6)/2 - 4

→ (8 + 6)/2 - 4

→ (14/2) - 4

→ 7 - 4

3 .

now, the result if the number that shyam thought was 7/4and the number given by ram was 3/2.

→ (2 * 7/4 + 6)/2 - 7/4 = 3/2

→ (7/2 + 6)/2 - 7/4 = 3/2

→ (7 + 12)/2 - 7/4 = 3/2

→ (19/2) - (7/4) = (3/2)

→ (19*2 - 7)/4 = (3/2)

→ (31/4) ≠ (3/2)

therefore, required result is (31/4) and ram's trick doesnt work .

The result if the number that shyam thought was (-4) is,

→ (2 * -4 + 6)/2 - (-4)

→ (-8 + 6)/2 + 4

→ (-2/2) + 4

→ (-1) + 4

3 .

Given :   a random number doubled and 6 added , then halved then subtract the initial number

Result is 3

To Find :  Whats the magic / logic behind this

What would be the result if the number that shyam thought was 4.

What would be the result if the number that shyam thought was 7/4and the number given by ram was 3/2. Does ram’s trick still work

An algebraic expression representing this situation

What would be the result if the number that shyam thought was -4

Solution:

Let say any random number assumed is N

Double of Number  =  2N

6 is added   Hence 2N + 6

Number of Halved = (2N + 6)/2  = N + 3

N is subtracted  hence N + 3 - N = 3

So Result is 3 , Independent of the value of  N

(2N + 6)/2 - N = 3

replace N with x

(2x + 6)/2 - x = 3  is the algebraic expression representing this situation

number that shyam thought was 7/4

Still result will be  3   Hence If Ram gives 3/2 trick does not work

Ram give 3/4 , trick does not work

As result must be 4   as its independent of number thought

if Ram give 3  then trick work

Verification

2 * (7/4)   = 7/2

7/2 + 6  = 19/2

(19/2) /2  = 19/4

19/4 -  7/4  = 12/4  = 3

if the number that shyam thought was -4  result would be 3  only

as result is independent of number thought

Verification

2 * (-4 )= -8

-8 + 6 = - 2

-2/2 = -1

-1 - (-4)  = 3
