Matilda’s character would be looked at as someone who was greedy and selfish. But could she be

There is no denying the fact that Matilda suffered from some flaws in her character. She just suffered from vanity, like most of the human beings do. She just wanted to look more beautiful and stylish. Like many of us, she borrowed jewelry from one of her acquaintances.  

However, the destiny turned out to be quite harsh on her. She lost the borrowed necklace. She did not know the necklace was just a copy of the original necklace. She bought an original necklace and worked very hard and long to pay for the money she had borrowed. The penance she underwent for her minor sin of vanity was many times more in proportion.
