Answer:

Matilda's overambitious was the cause of her destruction. She was born in a normal family and was married in a family of clerks but yet wished to be loved by the rich and the distinguished. She wanted to look presentable and pretty at the ball when they were invited and for that she bought a new dress and borrowed a beautiful necklace from her friend Mme Forestier. That night at the party Matilda was a success she looked mesmerising and everyone wanted to be presented to her. That day she lived the life but she always wanted to. But when she reached home she realized that she had lost the necklace, they tried their best to find the necklace but all the efforts went in vain. Since they could not find the necklace they thought of buying a similar one and handing it to Madam Forestier . The cost of the necklace they bought was around 36000 Francs. It took them 10 years to repay their debt and in that process they had lost their inheritance, property and were even reduced to the status of commoners. Her husband works several jobs to collect and save money whereas she washed clothes, utensils

etc at the houses of other people. For those 10 years they had to live a life of penury, deprivation and misery just because Matilda wanted to look good at the ball and this tells us that Matlida's dissatisfaction with her status in life resulted in utter disaster for her.
