Answer:

The Deccan was ruled by two Chalukyan dynasties, the western from Kalyani and the eastern from Vengi. The eastern Chalukyan kingdom founded by Kubja Vishnuvardhana, a brother of Pulakesin II, continued without break from then to the eleventh century when in the struggle between Kulottunga I and Vikramaditya VI it lost its identity.

The relations between the western and the eastern Chalukyan kingdoms were not always cordial, in fact were mostly inimical. Rajaraja took advantage of this and decided to befriend the weaker as against the stronger and create the traditional sphere of balance of power in South India.

So he entered into matrimonial alliance with the Eastern Chalukyas. Rajaraja gave his daughter Kundavai in marriage to Vimaladitya and this was but a beginning of series of diplomatic marriages between these two dynasties.
