Maury plans to mix 5 pints if blue dye with 2 pints of yellow dye to make a bluish-green dye. What he did by mistake is mix 2 pints of blue dye with 5 pints of yellow dye. How many pints of blue dye must he add in order to get the correct proportion he originally planned?

Answer:

He must add 10.5 pints of blue dye.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the amount of blue dye that Maury must add.

Then there would be x+2 pints of blue and 5 pints of yellow.

The required blue:yellow ratio is 5:2, so he needs

    (x+2) : 5  =  5 : 2

⇒ (x+2)/5 = 5/2

⇒ x+2 = (5×5)/2 = 25/2 = 12.5

⇒ x = 12.5 - 2 = 10.5

Hope that helps.
