perhaps the answer is  4 variables.

We can group 16 squares together belonging to 4 variables, also to make K-map for a larger number of variables too.  Thus we can make 5-variable K- map that consists of two 4-variable K-maps.

We can make a 6-variable K-map by combining 4 of 4-variable K-maps.
