Maximum work a gas can do if it is allowed to expand isothermally against b)high pressure of surrounding.

Explanation:

we know that the work done in any isothermal expansion is given by:

W = -Pext x ΔV

Hence if external pressure is maximum then the work done against it will be maximum. If Pext is zero as in vacuum then the work done is also zero in this process and the gas expands freely.

So for maximum work done external pressure should be maximum.
