Mean median mode definition in descriptive statistics
Answers
Mean is the average of a given set of data.
Example: Find the mean in 5, 8, 9, 2, 6, 8, 10.
Mean = Sum of all observation/Total number of observations.
Mean = 5 + 8 + 9 + 2 + 6 + 8 + 10/7
Mean = 48/7
Mean = 6.8
Median is the middlemost observation in a given set of data.
Example: Find the median in 4, 9, 6, 7, 5, 2, 3.
First, arrange them in ascending order.
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9
Median = (n + 1)/2, where n represents the total number of observations.
NOTE: The above formula is only when n = an odd number.
Median = (7 + 1)/2
Median = 8/2
Median = 4th term = 5
Now to find the median when n = an even number.
Find the median in 4, 5, 8, 7, 6, 3.
First, arrange them in ascending order.
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Median = (n/2) + (n/2 + 2)/2, where n represents the total number of observations.
NOTE: The above formula is only when n = an even number.
Median = (6/2) + (6/2 + 1)/2
Median = 3rd term + 4th term/2
Median = 5 + 6/2
Median = 11/2
Median = 5.5
Mode is the most repeated observation in a given set of data.
Example: Find the mode in 4, 5, 7, 2, 6, 7, 4, 7, 7
The most repeated number is 7.
Hope it helps :)
