The new mean = 17

Given :

  • Mean of 10 observations is 15

  • Each observation is increased by 2

To find :

The new mean is

  • 10

  • 15

  • 12

  • 17

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Write down the sum of observations

Here it is given that mean of 10 observations is 15

So sum of 10 observations

= 10 × 15

= 150

Step 2 of 3 :

Find new sum of observations after increasing each observation by 2

Number of observations = 10

Since each observation is increased by 2

So sum of observations will increased by

= 10 × 2

= 20

So new sum of observations after increasing each observation by 2

= 150 + ( 10 × 2 )

= 150 + 20

= 170

Step 3 of 3 :

Find the new mean

Number of observations = 10

Thus the required new mean

\displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{New \: sum  \: of \:  the  \: observations}{Number \:  of \:  observations}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  =  \frac{170}{10}  }

\displaystyle \sf{  =  17 }

Hence the correct option is 17
