Whether, you calculate mean by

1. Direct method =\frac{\text{Sum of all the observation}}{\text{total number of observation}}

2. Assumed mean method , a= Assumed mean

=a +\frac{sum (FX)}{Sum X}

3. Step deviation method ,more or less same as  assumed mean method., and you choose a number which makes your calculation easier.

So,least time taking is step deviation method.

But in all cases mean are same.
