Given : Mean of Raw Data and Grouped Data

To find : Which is more accurate

Solution:

mean of a raw data is more accurate than the mean of a grouped data

Lets take example

Data is

1  , 1   ,  2 , 2  , 6 , 6 , 6 , 6 ,  7 , 11  , 11  , 12 , 12  , 16  , 16  , 16 , 16 , 17 , 17 , 19

20 Data

Sum = 200

Mean = 200/20  = 10

Group      f            group mean    mean * frequency

1 - 5        4                 3                          12

6-10         5               8                         40

11-15         4              13                         52

16-20       7              18                         126

               20                                      230

Mean = 230/20   = 11.5

Mean increased from 10 to 11.5

as most of data i considered were on lower side of group

if they have been on upper side then mean have been reduced

if they are normally distributed then there is no impact on Mean
