Hi ,
*********************
we know that ,
mean = ( sum of the observations ) / ( number of observations )
*********************************************************
Sum of 8 observations = 8 × 5 = 40
If x is added then ,
sum of the observations = 40 + x
now number of observations = 9
mean = 5 ( given )
( 40 + x ) / 9 = 5
40 + x = 5 × 9
40 + x = 45
x = 45 - 40
x = 5
i hope this helps you .
