Answer:

Meaning as per the Oxford Dictionary:

  • general: “complete destruction or obliteration”.
  • Physics: “the conversion of matter into energy, especially the mutual conversion of a particle and an antiparticle into electromagnetic radiation.” .

These two meanings are slightly different. In Physics Annihilation of matter results in pure energy (mostly gamma rays or just very high energy photons) rather than obliteration.

As per the standard model of Particle Physics, there are 12 fundamental particles of matter. The remaining 5 particles in the model are force carriers.

  • For each particle XX (say) of matter, there exists an antiparticle X¯¯¯¯X¯, i.e. a particle almost identical to XX but has opposite charge. When these two particles come within the range of field interaction, each annihilates the other simultaneously and the result is a burst of rays of photons that usually fall in the range of Gamma radiation, however, it can consist of any gauge Boson and not just photon.

  • Now, the opposite process is called a ‘Pair production’ in which a high energy ray (usually gamma but can be any gauge Boson) converts itself into a particle and its corresponding antiparticle. The process of pair production is very critical because it needs to satisfy a number of conditions, such as,

  • The energy must be above the threshold (at least the sum of the rest mass energies of the particle and the antiparticle)
  • Energy and momentum must be conserved
  • All the quantum numbers must be conserved.

Thanks for the A2A.
