Answer: The answer is simple. They are just 2 atoms that have to combine with each other in their normal state

Explanation: Consider the molecule O2. The Oxygen atom does not stay as it is in the air because it can mix with other components in the air and form different compounds. So 2 Oxygen atoms combine with a covalent bond and become O2. These kinds of molecules with 2 atoms of the same type combined together are called Diatomic molecules. Other examples are : N2, H2 etc
