The subsidiary alliance was a type of indirect annexation started by the British governor General Lord Wellesly. Under this system the British promised to protect the Indian states by stationing their army in the ruler's territory but In return the Indian states had to make payment for their upkeep. If they failed to make payment the part of their territory was taken away as penalty. States like Hyderabad and Awadh were annexed by subsidiary alliance
