The literal meaning of Antyaja is born outside the cast system or the last born.
Explanation:
- Several jatis were originated from the Varna system on the basis of two attributes known as Guna meaning natural characteristics and Karma meaning action, acts.
- Amid such jatis, some were pushed to the lowest stair of the social ladder because of their uncleanliness food habits and amoral attitude that was unacceptable to the rest of society.
- Hence they were named Antyaja. They provide inexpensive labor to both peasants and Zamindars.
