First, take (a+b). then , square it :

(a + b) {}^{2}  = aa + ab + ba + bb  \\  \\  =  {a}^{2}  + 2ab +  {b}^{2}

subtract 2ab from both sides , you have

 {a}^{2}  + 2ab +  {b}^{2}  - 2ab = (a + b) {}^{2}  - 2ab

 {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  = (a + b) {}^{2}  - 2ab
