A seismometer detects the vibrations caused by an earthquake. It plots these vibrations on a seismograph based on seismic moment. This process of measuring earthquake is known as seismography.
The strength, or magnitude, of an earthquake is measured using the Richter scale.

I hope this helps you ^_^

Earthquake➫ Any sudden shaking of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves through Earth's rocks.

♦ Earthquakes can be extremely violent or so slight that they only register on instruments.

♦ The largest fault surfaces on Earth are formed due to boundaries between moving plates.

♦ They are caused by sudden movements of the Earth's tectonic plates.

♦ The sudden release of tension in the tectonic plates sends waves of energy that travel through the Earth.
