Mechanics of Breathing. The action of breathing in and out is due to changes of pressure within the thorax, in comparison with the outside. This action is also known as external respiration. When we inhale the intercostal muscles (between the ribs) and diaphragm contract to expand the chest cavity.

Explanation:

Mechanism of Breathing :-

Breathing is the simple mechanical process and first step in respiration. The air is passed in and out of the lungs by alternate expansion and contraction of thoracic (chest) cavity. This occurs by the movement of intercostal and diaphragm muscles which alter the volume of the thoracic cavity.

Breathing occurs in the following two steps :-

  • Inhalation or inspiration
  • Exhalation or expiration
