Heya!

The process of breathing(respiration) is divided into two distinct phases, inspiration (inhalation) and expiration (exhalation).During expiration, the diaphragm relaxes, and the volume of the thoracic cavity decreases, while the pressure within it increases. As a result, the lungs contract and air is forced out.

Mechanics of Breathing. The processes of inspiration and expiration are vital for providing oxygen to tissues and removing carbon dioxide from the body. Inspiration occurs via contraction of muscles such as the diaphragm, whereas expiration tends to be passive at rest.

Hope it helps...

Mechanism of Inspiration- When we breath in or inhale the air the volume of the thorax increases. When the volume of thorax increases the thorax and sternum get raised and the diaphgram get contracted and the air enters our lungs. Mechanism of Expiration- When we breath out or exale the CO2 out the volume of the thorax decrease. When the volume of the thorax decreases the ribs and the sternum goes back to its orignal position. The diaphgram get relaxed and arched upward and the CO2 is expelled out of the lungs.
